World stockpiles are set to swell to the highest ever this season and stay near the record next year, according to the US department of agriculture. Sugar futures in New York have already slumped 25% in 2018. That’s the biggest loss on the Bloomberg Commodity Index, which tracks returns for 22 components.
"Unless there’s a weather issue, it doesn’t look that the bulls have any hope for a sustained rally," said Donald Selkin, a New York-based chief market strategist at Newbridge Securities, which oversees about $2bn. "Everybody is trying to do away with sugar and sugary products. You see that in supermarkets and grocery stores. Demand is going to remain less than it’s been in recent years. The government has set a price floor on bread. Manufacturers can’t sell loaves for less than $5.00, which is a dollar above the market price. What will most likely result from the price control?
A. The quantity demanded for bread will decrease, and the quantity supplied will increase
B. The quantity demand and quantity supplied for bread will increase
C. The quantity demand for bread will increase, and the quantity supplied will decrease
D. The quantity demand and quantity supplied for bread will decrease
Answer:
A
Explanation:
The most likely result from the government setting a price floor on bread at $5.00, which is a dollar above the market price, is: A. The quantity demanded for bread will decrease, and the quantity supplied will increase.
A price floor is a minimum price set by the government above the equilibrium price, which producers cannot sell below. When a price floor is set above the equilibrium price, it results in a surplus where the quantity of bread supplied by producers exceeds the quantity demanded by consumers at that price. This happens because at the higher price, consumers will purchase less bread than they would at the market equilibrium price, and producers, incentivized by the higher price, will produce more bread than what is demanded. This leads to an excess supply or surplus of bread in the market.
What contributed to the growth of representatives self government and democracy in the 13 colonies
There are three reasons for the growth of representative self-government in the 13 colonies. One of them is the population growth: this allowed cities to be formed and at the same time centers of government appeared. Another reason is the development of an independent economy: this allowed some colonies to issue their own money. And last but not least, the attempts of the British to control and dominate their colonies: this made the colonies to really want to have a self-government and their citizens to decide who they want to rule over them.
What does salutary neglect mean
It's an old British policy that avoided being strict with laws. It was also used to make sure colonies stayed obedient to England.
List at least three achievements of the New Deal.
1. It helped a large number of people, caught in the worst depression in American history, by providing them jobs, financing farm and home mortgages. Though vigorous banking policy the administration saved many people from grave difficulty. Its relief programs enabled the unfortunate people to earn money without sacrificing their self-respect.
2. The Work Progress Administration (W.P.A.) and Public Works Administration (P.W.A.) rendered valuable services to the country by constructing roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and works of art. Similarly the Tennessee Valley Authority (T.V.A.) helped in the transformation of the great region by bringing under cultivation millions of acres and helping in the establishment or prosperous industries.
3. In the sphere of social security also the New Deal Administration helped in removing the American backwardness and provided for schemes like old age pensions, unemployment insurance etc. In subsequent years the scope of social security measures further widened.
The New Deal's achievements included banking system reform with the FDIC's creation, job creation through programs like the Works Progress Administration, and agricultural adjustment to stabilize farm markets.
Explanation:The New Deal, implemented by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the Great Depression, had several key achievements:
Reform of the Banking System: The New Deal led to major reforms in the banking system, including the establishment of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in 1933 which protected depositors' money, thereby restoring trust in the banking system.Job Creation: The creation of work-relief programs like the Works Progress Administration provided employment for millions of Americans, thus reducing unemployment and boosting consumer spending.Agricultural Adjustment: Programs were introduced to stabilize agricultural markets, which included payments to farmers to reduce crop acreage and increase farm prices, alleviating the plight of the American farmer. These steps laid the groundwork for economic recovery and long-term financial stability. The New Deal was instrumental in reversing the economic downturn and restoring hope among the American populace, marked by increased optimism and a re-energized workforce.

Almost one-third of the world's population does not have access to clean water. True False
true. most of the population around the world has almost no access to clean water.
The statement is true, almost one-third of the world's population lacks access to clean water. The small portion of accessible fresh water, coupled with the mounting pressures of global population and environmental changes, exacerbates this issue. The water crisis often severely impacts the most vulnerable populations such as low-income countries and can impede socio-economic advancement, notably through impacts on health and education.
Explanation:The statement that almost one-third of the world's population does not have access to clean water is indeed true. Lack of access to clean water significantly contributes to medical issues in low-income countries.
Let's understand some figures. Only 2.5 percent of water on Earth is fresh water, and less than 1 percent of that is easily accessible to humans and other living things. This indicates a global shortage of usable fresh water.
The water crisis also interlinks with many other social issues. For example, in certain regions, children often carry the burden of traveling long distances to fetch potable water. This task interferes with their educational opportunities and has a negative impact on their physical health, particularly for pregnant women. The situation worsens as our global population and environmental pressures increase, making clean water a major resource battleground in the twenty-first century.

what was happening to the Ottoman Empire after 1830
Greece was recognized as a fully independent and sovereign kingdom in the London Protocol.
In 1830, this revolution for independence was the first of many as countries began to break away from the declining Ottoman Empire. It showed the weakness of the Ottoman government and military.
After 1830, the Ottoman Empire was known as "the sick man of Europe" due to its steady decline. It lost several Balkan territories and struggled with internal corruption, decentralization, and technological stagnation. European influence grew in the region as the empire's power waned, ultimately leading to the empire's collapse after World War I.
Explanation:After 1830, the Ottoman Empire was experiencing a period of significant decline, known metaphorically as "the sick man of Europe." With Greece obtaining its independence in 1830, the empire faced uprisings from various ethnic groups and lost territories in the Balkans, such as Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria, in the 1870s. Military corruption, governmental decentralization, and stagnation in cultural and technological development are cited as contributing factors. European powers took advantage by occupying lands as the Ottoman influence receded.
The empire attempted to modernize and introduced administrative reforms, but these efforts fell short. The situation was further complicated by the geopolitical importance of the region, particularly with the involvement of European powers and Russia. Despite resistance, the Ottoman Empire eventually disintegrated, culminating in its collapse after World War I, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

What social issues were being dealt with by America in the 1980’s?
I believe the correct answer is segregation
Final answer:
During the 1980s, America contended with the HIV/AIDS crisis, a war on drugs, and socio-economic disparities worsened by racial discrimination and a decrease in federal community support. The era is remembered for social conservatism, political challenges to civil liberties, and high rates of incarceration, as well as a culture of material wealth contrasted with widespread charity efforts.
Explanation:
Social Issues in America During the 1980s
The 1980s in America were characterized by a variety of social issues that shaped the nation's political and cultural landscape. One significant issue was the onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis, which triggered widespread panic and discrimination, particularly against the gay community. As the disease became associated chiefly with gay men, there was a failure to act by the general public, the medical community, and especially the federal government, leading to advocacy movements pushing for more research and support.
Simultaneously, the nation faced a 'war on drugs,' marked by harsh law enforcement and sentencing policies that disproportionately affected Black and Hispanic communities, resulting in mass incarceration on racial grounds. This era also saw a retreat from progress made by civil rights movements, with a decline in support for affirmative action and an assault on urban black communities through such means as reduced federal grants and the introduction of crack cocaine, leading to exacerbated socio-economic disparities.
Despite the perceived material affluence and 'decade of greed,' the 1980s also witnessed acts of generosity, with increased donations to charities domestically and internationally. Nonetheless, many Americans still grappled with poverty, racial and ethnic discrimination, which were compounded by socio-political and economic challenges of the times.

what was a primary reason for the establishment of the open door policy
Final answer:
The Open Door Policy was established to ensure the United States had equal access to Chinese markets amidst European and Japanese spheres of influence, maintaining China's sovereignty and leveraging American economic advantages in high-quality and cost-effective goods.
Explanation:
A primary reason for the establishment of the Open Door Policy was the United States' ambition to secure equal trade opportunities in China without being excluded by the spheres of influence established by other powers such as Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and Japan. The policy, introduced through letters by U.S. Secretary of State John Hay in 1899, aimed to prevent the partition of China by these powers and maintain China's territorial integrity, ensuring that all countries had equal trading rights. This move was motivated by the desire of American businesses to access China's vast markets without the restrictions of spheres of influence and without engaging in the colonial or territorial control that European powers pursued.
The Open Door Policy significantly favored the United States because American businesses produced higher-quality and lower-cost goods than those of other countries, allowing them to dominate the Chinese market under this 'free trade' arrangement. Hay's diplomacy effectively leveraged this economic advantage, promoting American interests while ostensibly presenting the policy as a measure for the mutual benefit of all foreign powers involved and the preservation of China's sovereignty.

When did the process of international organization start?1 It was not in 1945 nor in 1919. Rather, it was the Congress of Vienna (1814-15) that proved to be the relevant turning point in history, when certain conditions allowed a number of European States to set in motion a series of innovations, inventions and learning processes that shaped the core of what we today refer to as international organizations (IOs).The major innovation at Vienna was the follow-up conference. This new idea resulted in the custom of participating States to convene, upon reaching an agreement, a follow-up conference to assess whether previously agreed-upon decisions and policies had been executed. ... Consequently, since 1815, that innovative idea resulted in an ongoing cycle of conferences dealing with similar and related issues. How can you use this document to argue that imperialism (colonization) was one underlying cause of World War I
Imperialism is a type of advocacy of empire. Its name originated from the Latin word "imperium", which means to rule over large territories. Imperialism is "a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means".[2] Imperialism has greatly shaped the contemporary world.[3] It has also allowed for the rapid spread of technologies and ideas. The term imperialism has been applied to Western (and Japanese) political and economic dominance especially in Asia and Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its precise meaning continues to be debated by scholars. Some writers, such as Edward Said, use the term more broadly to describe any system of domination and subordination organised with an imperial center and a periphery.[4]
Imperialism is defined as "A policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force."[5] Imperialism is particularly focused on the control that one group, often a state power, has on another group of people.[6] This is often through various forms of "othering" (see other) based on racial, religious, or cultural stereotypes. There are "formal" or "informal" imperialisms. "Formal imperialism" is defined as "physical control or full-fledged colonial rule".[6] "Informal imperialism" is less direct; however, it is still a powerful form of dominance.[6]
The definition of imperialism has not been finalized for centuries and was confusedly seen to represent the policies of major powers, or simply, general-purpose aggressiveness. Further on, some writers[who?] used the term imperialism, in slightly more discriminating fashion, to mean all kinds of domination or control by a group of people over another. To clear out this confusion about the definition of imperialism one could speak of "formal" and "informal" imperialism, the first meaning physical control or "full-fledged colonial rule" while the second implied less direct rule though still containing perceivable kinds of dominance.[6] Informal rule is generally less costly than taking over territories formally. This is because, with informal rule, the control is spread more subtly through technological superiority, enforcing land officials into large debts that cannot be repaid, ownership of private industries thus expanding the controlled area, or having countries agree to uneven trade agreements forcefully.[7]
It is mostly accepted that modern-day colonialism is an expression of imperialism and cannot exist without the latter. The extent to which "informal" imperialism with no formal colonies is properly described remains a controversial topic amongst historians.[8] Both colonization and imperialism have been described by Tom Nairn and Paul James as early forms of globalization:
Even if a particular empire does not have a "global reach" as we would define it today, empires by their nature still tend to contribute to processes of globalization because of the way that imperial power tends to generate counter-power at its edge-lands and send out reverberations far beyond the territories of their immediate control.[9]
The word imperialism became common in Great Britain during the 1870s and was used with a negative connotation.[10] In Britain, the word had until then mostly been used to refer to the politics of Napoleon III in obtaining favorable public opinion in France through foreign military interventions

Most mining towns were A. Highly Prosperous. B. Overcrowded C. Economic Centers D. Short-lived Ghost Towns.
Majority of mining towns during the American 'Wild West' were short-lived and ended up as 'ghost towns' once the resources, mainly precious metals, were depleted. A few, however, evolved into permanent settlements due to larger, stable mining operations funded by big businesses. These towns significantly impacted the culture and history of the region.
Explanation:Most mining towns in the history of the American West were, in fact, D. Short-lived Ghost Towns. Initially, these towns sprung up around areas where gold or other precious metals were found. They typically had stores, saloons, and brothels, and were places for the gold diggers and other miners to spend their earnings. However, most of these towns had a very transient population, who moved on to other places once the easily accessible minerals were depleted.
By the 1860s and 1870s, finding precious metals required more effort, as the easily reachable resources had been exploited. This shift started a trend towards larger, more stable mining operations funded by big businesses. A few of these mining settlements, like Denver, Colorado, even grew into permanent urban settlements.
However, the majority of mining towns ended up deserted, or became 'ghost towns', once the mines were exhausted. Even today, one can find remnants of these towns while travelling through the American West. These towns had a significant impact on the culture and history of the western United States, and their rise and fall symbolizes the transitory and often chaotic nature of the American 'Wild West'.
