Which detail from the text best supports Sophie’s topic sentence?

A. The main character traveled with a husky dog as a companion.
B. An old-time prospector offered the man some helpful advice.
C. Snow from a tree branch soaked the man’s newly built fire.
D. The camp of the prospectors was located on Sulphur Creek.

Answers

Answer 1
C snow from a tree branch soaked the man's newly built fire

Answer 2

Answer: The detail from the text that best supports Sophie's topic sentence is C. Snow from a tree branch soaked the man’s newly built fire.

Explanation: A topic sentence expresses the main idea or point of a paragraph; therefore, it summarizes the information that is going to be presented in that paragraph. Moreover, the rest of the sentences in that paragraph must provide evidence that support the topic sentence. In that way, as the topic sentence about Jack London's "To Build a Fire" makes reference to the way in which nature affects prospectors, the detail from the text that best supports it is C. "Snow from a tree branch soaked the man’s newly built fire" since it presents a situation in which a natural element (snow) caused a difficulty to a prospector.

The phrase "With sounds like dry rattling of a shutter" exemplifies onomatopoeia, which is a figure of speech where the word used imitates the natural sound of the action it describes.

The phrase "With sounds like dry rattling of a shutter" is an example of an onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is a figure of speech where words are used that imitate the natural sounds they describe, often creating a sound effect that mimics the thing described, thereby making descriptions more expressive and interesting. In this case, the word 'rattling' conveys the sound that shutters make when they are shaken, for example, by the wind.

The dynamic interaction between sound and perception is captured in Ingold's observation that the words we use, such as 'slamming' or 'whistling', describe actions or movements rather than static objects. Similarly, 'rattling' is not just about the sound itself, but also the motion that produces it. Furthermore, such sounds are often part of our background noise, which we learn to filter, as mentioned in Stand up, Speak out.

How does contextual information about the Klondike gold rush help readers understand Jack London’s story and his purpose in the excerpt from “To Build a Fire”?

Answers

Jack London spent some time as a prospector in the Klondike. He was aware of how dangerous ignorance could be in such harsh conditions. “To Build a Fire” reflects London’s experience with many foolish prospectors who died from the cold and of malnutrition.
The contextual information suggests why the unnamed prospector in the story might have been overconfident: He was new to the area and might have been misled by popular and sensational accounts of the gold rush. These accounts depicted the prospectors as heroes discovering new frontiers and making their own fortunes. They did not describe the suffering of life in the Canadian wilderness.
Contextual information also helps us understand the author’s purpose: to expose the truth about the dangerous conditions faced by prospectors during the Klondike gold rush. London informs his readers of what exactly prospecting involves and the importance of knowing the dangers of the environment and one’s own limits.
Final answer:

Understanding the context of the Klondike Gold Rush provides insight into the experiences of the characters in Jack London's story, 'To Build a Fire'. This historical event highlights the harsh realities of man's struggle against nature and enriches the reader’s understanding of London’s work.

Explanation:

The Klondike Gold Rush refers to a time in history, towards the end of the 19th century, when gold was discovered in the Klondike region of Canada. This led to an influx of approximately 100,000 prospectors, with many suffering from the brutal conditions of the region. Understanding this historical event helps the reader to appreciate the struggles in Jack London’s story, To Build a Fire.

Jack London personally experienced the Klondike Gold Rush, which greatly influenced his writing. Using the backdrop of the gold rush, London illustrates the conflict between man and nature, a recurring theme in his work. This was a reality for many prospectors who were ill-prepared for the harsh Arctic conditions.

In To Build a Fire, the protagonist’s struggle to survive harsh conditions in the hope of discovering gold reflects the journey of many during the Klondike Gold Rush. The contextual information enriches readers’ understanding of the severity of the protagonist's circumstances and enhances the theme of man versus nature.

An essay which has a thesis supported with examples is called process analysis. true or false

Answers

the answer is false because it wouldnt make any sence

Final answer:

The term 'process analysis' is not applicable to an essay with a thesis supported by examples; this describes an analytical essay. The thesis should be supported using a pattern of points, evidence, and analysis for clear and logical presentation.

Explanation:

The student's question seems to confuse the concept of process analysis with the structure of an analytical essay. Process analysis is a type of expository writing that explains the steps or stages in a process. However, the student is describing a typical analytical essay where a thesis is supported with examples and evidence. In an analytical essay, the author supports the thesis with reasoning, and this support must be sufficient to persuade the reader of its validity.

In a well-structured essay, each body paragraph should contain a point that refers back to the thesis, followed by evidence, such as quotes or paraphrases, and an analysis that explains how the evidence supports the point. This pattern of point, evidence, and analysis ensures that the essay maintains a clear focus on its thesis statement throughout.

In evaluating whether the reasoning sufficiently supports the thesis, a reader must assess whether the evidence presented is credible and whether the analysis adequately explains how that evidence connects to the claims being made. Consistency, quality of evidence, logical organization, and the use of transitions to link ideas all contribute to the strength of the essay's arguments.

Why is it important for writers to keep a record of their reviewed papers?

to share their mistakes with their classmates

to criticize their own errors

to get a second opinion

to identify and eliminate habitual errors

to check whether other writers make similar mistakes

Answers

to identify and eliminate habitual errors

Any of these options are things a writer may do and may find beneficial in their particular circumstances, but I find choice D to be most important. Like choice B, it emphasizes that reviewed papers are a useful source of self-examination and noticing what went wrong, but the language of choice D is more neutral and less punishing, encouraging the writer not to beat him- or herself up for past mistakes but rather to merely be heedful of them and learn for them so as to improve. I would be inclined to add that keeping a collection of reviewed papers can also allow you to revisit what went right and learn from successes in order to replicate them, especially if the write is on his or her way to acclimation in a new environment and must learn the tastes of a new professor, boss, institution, etc. Choice C is also quite a valid approach to learning but seemed slightly less relevant to the question at hand - that is, a physical copy doesn't seem totally necessary for remembering a second opinion, while that physical or digital copy may be more helpful for recalling less broadly memorable issues, like technical or stylistic errors - and choices A and E just didn't strike me as as important for success.

Flashes of light burst through the darkness, and wind races past my window. The thrilling combination of sight and sound conjures up visions of dragons roaring proudly, breathing fire, and soaring across the midnight sky. Dragons first fascinated me when I was a little girl. They have followed me ever since. The magnificent creatures appeared in storybooks I read in the library, paintings I saw in museums, movies I watched in the theater, and the dreams I had in my sleep. By the time I was thirteen, one question consumed me. I wanted to know if dragons ever existed, so I set out on a quest for facts. 2 As I started my research, I discovered many skeptics. Scientists presented evidence to show why dragons could notand did notexist. They explained that it would be impossible for dragons to fly because they would be too big. They laughed at the idea of dragons breathing fire. They pointed out that no other animal has ever done this. They said that if dragons had lived, someone would have found remains somewhere in the world. No bones about it, there were plenty of logical explanations. It would have been easy for me to accept that the only place dragons ever existed was in the imaginations of those who believed. 3 I could have given up, but I thought about my grandmother. She always told me that "people who believe that science is the answer to everything are missing out on everything else." With her words in mind, I searched some more. There were many facts that hinted that dragons may not be fictional. I noticed that cultures across the world all described dragons in similar ways. This was odd because they had no way to communicate with each other. I found dragons mentioned in more than just stories. They appeared in old legal papers, in the travel logs of Marco Polo, and in the Bible. I saw that the Chinese calendar uses a different animal each year. Dragons are included along with eleven real animals. I began to believe it was a real possibility that all of these people were talking about a creature that actually existed. 4 With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. I found that some experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons. They suggested that a dragon could have four stomachs like a cow. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. This would give it the ability to fly. If it forced out air when diving toward the earth, it might release gases which could ignite into flame. When the animal died, the stomachs would release strong acids that would dissolve its dead body over time. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way. 5 I doubt we will ever truly know whether dragons existed.
