Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

Answer 1

Explanation:

What are two strategies the speaker uses to develop the point that volunteer opportunities are not legitimate ways to learn about other cultures?

well volunteer opportunities can be a way to lean about cultures but also can learn about how people live there lives.

Answer 2

The speaker develops the point that voluntour opportunities are not legitimate ways to learn about other cultures by using expert testimony and statistics. Option A, E

In terms of expert testimony, the speaker references Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, who highlights the shocking reality that certain places, such as animal sanctuaries and orphanages, may be manufactured specifically for voluntourists.

This expert testimony provides credibility to the speaker's argument and emphasizes that the voluntourism experience can be exploitative rather than genuinely beneficial to the local communities.

Additionally, the speaker employs statistics to support their point. They mention that the average cost of a voluntour travel package is $3,400, highlighting the financial aspect of voluntourism.

By presenting this statistic, the speaker implies that the money spent on voluntourism could be better allocated to alternative methods of making a positive impact, such as contributing funds to local efforts or international organizations.

In summary, the speaker utilizes expert testimony and statistics to reinforce the idea that voluntour opportunities are not legitimate ways to learn about other cultures.

The expert testimony provides insights into the potential exploitation involved in voluntourism, while the statistics emphasize the financial implications and suggest better uses for the resources that would otherwise be spent on voluntourism. So Option A, E is correct.

Which paragraphs contain the thesis statement?
a 2 and 5
b 1 and 2
C1 and 5
d 3 and 4

Answers

The thesis statement is typically found in the first paragraph of an essay and is often reiterated in the final paragraph, suggesting that option (C), paragraphs 1 and 5, might be the correct choice if the essay follows standard structure.

The question asks which paragraphs contain the thesis statement. Generally, in essay writing, an introductory statement of the thesis is given at the beginning of the essay and a concluding statement appears at the end. Considering the standard five-paragraph essay structure presented, where the introductory paragraph starts broad and narrows to a thesis at the very end, and that the thesis is often restated in the final paragraph, the correct answer would most likely be the first and last paragraphs. Therefore, if the essay in question follows this structure, the correct answer could be option (C), paragraphs 1 and 5. However, since actual paragraph numbers are not provided, the student should examine their essay to determine if the thesis is indeed presented in the introductory paragraph and reiterated in the conclusion, as is the common academic practice.

what is a car rally

Answers

Car rally:

In a street rally, contenders contend over a foreordained course with time as the opponent. Vehicles start at (normally) one-minute interims. There is no immediate no holds barred dashing, and nowadays the accentuation is particularly on route and cooperation instead of absolute speed.

They run with time as the opponent, each vehicle in turn, on earth, asphalt, and anything in the middle. They run in all climate, in for all intents and purposes each nation on the planet. The game is a brilliant, beautiful thing, all commotion, and brutality and sliding sideways between trees at 100 mph.

The easiest answer is that Rally is each vehicle in turn on an open street shut down for hustling, and Rallycross is numerous autos running together on a shut course explicitly intended for dashing.

A car rally is a competitive event where drivers and their navigators must follow a specific route at a specified average speed over various types of terrain. The challenge lies in the precision of timekeeping and navigation rather than the outright speed of the vehicles involved. Participants are given a set of instructions that describe the route and include average speeds or times to be maintained over certain distances. The goal is to reach each checkpoint at the exact prescribed time, not necessarily to be the fastest. Penalties are assigned for arriving too early or too late at these checkpoints. Car rallies can range from local club events to international competitions and require a combination of driving skill, teamwork, and strategic planning to successfully complete the course.

In the excerpt from Julius Caesar, which appeal most clearly makes use of
logos?
A. Brutus tells the crowd he that loved Caesar as much as anyone.
B. Antony says that he is an ordinary man who speaks plainly.
O
C. Brutus argues that any true Roman would not accept slavery.
O
D. Antony gives evidence proving that Caesar was not ambitious.

Answers

The excerpt from "Julio Cesar" that features logos is the one where Antony shows proof of the information he presents.

In this case we can confirm that Option D is the correct answer.

Logos is the rhetorical resource that stimulates logic and seeks to prove, through reasoning, how two or more pieces of information are related and correct.

In the play "Julio Cesar" written by Shakespeare, we can see that after the murder of Julio Cesar, the conspirators stated that he needed to die because he was too ambitious and that was dangerous for the people.

However, Antony, who did not agree with this, showed, in a logical way, that Cesar was not ambitious.

Antony stated that:

Cesar did not accept the crown, even though it was offered to him several times. An ambitious person would accept.Cesar wanted to reward each citizen of the city with 75 pieces of silver. An ambitious person, he would never do that.Cesar felt unhappy when citizens were unhappy. An ambitious person would never feel that way.

Antony managed to convince the public through the use of logos, which allows us to conclude that the use of rhetorical resources is very important for a successful speech.

Option D, where Antony provides evidence of Caesar's lack of ambition, is the appeal that most clearly uses logos by employing logical evidence and reasoning.

In the excerpt from Julius Caesar, the appeal that most clearly makes use of logos is option D, where Antony gives evidence proving that Caesar was not ambitious. This option represents an appeal to logic by presenting factual evidence to support the argument.  However, Antony, who did not agree with this, showed, in a logical way, that Cesar was not ambitious.

Antony's strategy is to use facts and reasoning to challenge the accusation that Caesar was overly ambitious, a claim that was central to the justification for his assassination. Antony stated that Caesar did not accept the crown, even though it was offered to him several times, which an ambitious person would accept and he wanted to reward each citizen of the city with 75 pieces of silver. However, an ambitious person would never do that.

Do you think Jane Elliot was justified in using children for her brown eyes/ blue eyes experiment? Why or why not?

Answers

Can you explain please

Final answer:

Jane Elliot was justified in using children for her brown eyes/blue eyes experiment for educational purposes and to create empathy and understanding about discrimination. However, ethical concerns exist around conducting experiments on children.

Explanation:

Jane Elliot was justified in using children for her brown eyes/blue eyes experiment for several reasons. Firstly, the experiment aimed to demonstrate the impact of discrimination and prejudice based on eye color, which is a significant issue in society. By using children, Elliot was able to create a controlled environment to observe and educate about these issues.

Secondly, the experiment showed the children firsthand how discrimination feels, helping them develop empathy and understanding. This type of experiential learning can be a powerful tool for promoting social change and tolerance. Ultimately, the experiment was conducted for educational purposes and had a positive impact on the children involved and their understanding of discrimination.

However, it is important to note that the ethics involved in conducting such experiments on children are a matter of debate, and some may argue that the potential harm to the children outweighs the educational benefits. This question of justification is subjective and depends on one's perspective and values.
