Dr. Trisha Keller, Manatee Veterinarian
by Rick Santos, for the Highland School News

1 Rick: Dr. Keller, would you please tell us where you work?
Dr. Keller: I work at a manatee rescue center in Florida, where our goal is to nurse injured or sick manatees back to health and return them to the wild. Before we do this, we insert a tracking device into each manatee, so we can monitor it. This enables us to ensure that the manatee remains healthy and is doing okay on its own.

2 Rick: What is it like at the manatee rescue center?
Dr. Keller: The manatee rescue center is an incredible place that was designed especially for manatees. It has several treatment pools where we place injured or sick manatees, so we can easily access them. The center also has a large-animal x-ray machine and an operating room. The rescue center also has a cafeteria for the employees with cool manatee artwork on the walls.

3 Rick: Are any of the manatees brought to the center cubs?
Dr. Keller: Yes, the center treats many orphaned cubs. We initially feed them using a bottle until they are old enough to eat solid food. Then we feed them Romaine lettuce and other vegetation.

4 Rick: What can people do to help manatees in the wild?
Dr. Keller: People in boats should travel very slowly. If they fish, they should be sure to remove discarded fishing line from the water. They should not pollute the water or feed manatees. If they see an injured or a sick manatee, they should call the center right away.

5 Rick: What advice do you have for someone who wants to become a manatee veterinarian?
Dr. Keller: Take many science courses in school and spend time volunteering at a manatee rescue center.

Florida's Sea Cows

6 Manatees are slow moving creatures and have a large, round body, which can weigh as much as 1,200 pounds. The manatees in Florida are gray and have two forelimbs called flippers, which they use to paddle through the water along with their tail. Their head and face are wrinkled like a raisin, and they have whiskers on their snout. While a manatee won't win a beauty contest, it is a harmless creature that spends its time swimming slowly, sleeping, and chomping on sea grass, the mainstay of its diet.

7 These gentle giants are in danger of extinction, which means they might not be around in the future. In Florida alone, there were 392 manatee mortalities in 2012. Manatees have no known predators. However, they frequently collide with boats. They must not be very bright! Manatees stay near the surface of water because they must come out of the water to breathe. A manatee may come up to breathe every few minutes. This puts the manatee in danger if a fast-moving boat approaches it. The manatee may not be able to swim fast enough to escape.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

D. describes manatees as Sea cows

Answer 2

Answer:

The best option is letter D. With a docile nature, manatees are often called sea cows because of their appearance.

Explanation:

A topic sentence is supposed to  inform readers on what the paragraph is about. It lets readers know where the author is going and how they are getting there in terms of the idea being developed. The sentences that come after the topic sentence function as its support, as evidence to defend the topic.

The best topic sentence for section 6 would be "With a docile nature, manatees are often called sea cows because of their appearance." The paragraph in section 6 corroborates the information stated in this topic sentence. The sentences describe what the manatees look like; how much they weigh; how peacefully they spend their days moving slowly, eating (sea) grass - just like a cow. Thus, the sentences in section 6 function as evidence that would support the claim that manatees are docile and that they look like cows.

What inferences can you make from the following paragraph about Ricky based on his words and actions in the passage below? Select all that apply.

Ricky's temper got the best of him again. He stomped upstairs, violently slammed his door, and hurled his textbooks across the room. Angry that he had come home to find his little brother using his computer yet again, Ricky shoved his little brother and gave his mother grief for "allowing" it to happen. "No one in this house has any respect for me," Ricky spat out loud. "I should just move out!"

a.This is the not the first time that Ricky has lost his temper and gotten frustrated with his family.
b.Ricky easily loses his temper.
c.Ricky wants to get help controlling his anger.
d.Ricky is going to get in trouble for slamming his door.

Answers

Answer:

a. This is the not the first time that Ricky has lost his temper and gotten frustrated with his family.

b. Ricky easily loses his temper.

Explanation:

The first sentence shows us that Ricky has lost his temper in the past, by using the word "again" the author emphasizes that this is happening one more time. By finding his little brother using his computer "again" we clearly see that very similar situations happened before. This gives us a clue, it seems that this things are very common in his house, therefore he has gotten frustrated in the past.

We can also infer that Ricky loses his temper very easily, he could had managed the situation in another way. However, he got very angry and reacted in a violent way, yelling at his mother and hitting his brother.

In the text we can't see if he wants to control his anger, he never mentions it.

We don't know if he is going to get in trouble as the text doesn't say anything about his mother's reaction. We can expect that in an average family he would get in trouble for what he did, but the passage doesn't give the necessary information.

Do you trust joe starks? Do you think he will be different than Janie's first husband? Why or why not ?

Answers

Answer:

No i do not trust Joe Starks because he suffers from an overdose of ambition, a lack of communication, a superiority complex, and uncontrollable jealousy over Janie. Joe mixes conceptions of manhood with his right to power, wealth, and authority. He considers himself perfectly justified not only in building up the town but ruling it, deciding who can live there and whose opinion counts. His high-handed tyranny of Eatonville often has the inhabitants grumbling and comparing him to white slave masters. Joe resembles a white slave master in more than one way.

Joe Starks is a character from the novel 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' by Zora Neale Hurston. Whether or not we can trust him and if he will be different from Janie's first husband is subjective and depends on one's interpretation of the novel.

Based on the information provided, Joe Starks is a character from the novel 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' by Zora Neale Hurston. To determine if we can trust Joe Starks and if he will be different from Janie's first husband, we need to analyze his actions and characteristics in comparison to Janie's first husband.

In the novel, Janie's first husband treated her poorly, did not respect her desires, and ultimately oppressed her. Joe Starks, on the other hand, initially appears to be a charismatic and ambitious man who promises to provide a better life for Janie. However, as their relationship progresses, Joe also reveals his controlling and domineering nature.

Ultimately, whether or not we can trust Joe Starks and if he will be different from Janie's first husband depends on one's interpretation of the novel. Some readers may believe that Joe Starks is a changed man who genuinely loves Janie and wants the best for her, while others may argue that he is simply a different version of her first husband, seeking power and control.

Who said courage is not the lack of fear but the ability to face it

many people use fear but the more you fear means the more you hold back from experiencing new thing

Final answer:

The concept that courage is not about the absence of fear, but rather the capacity to confront it, is a widespread idea attributed to Lt. John B. Putnam Jr., although similar sentiments have been expressed by figures like Nelson Mandela and Maya Angelou. Courage involves both moral and physical bravery, underscored by a commitment to principle and a resolve to overcome challenges despite fear.

Explanation:

The quote, "Courage is not the lack of fear but the ability to face it," has been attributed to Lt. John B. Putnam Jr. However, variations of this concept can be found throughout history, including similar sentiments expressed by notable figures such as Nelson Mandela and Maya Angelou. Courage, in various texts, is often discussed as a moral and physical virtue, emblematic of the human spirit's resilience and ability to confront challenges, regardless of the presence of fear. This understanding of courage emphasizes that true bravery stems not from an absence of fear, but rather from the willpower and determination to overcome it.

Furthermore, courage is deeply intertwined with moral strength and the pursuit of righteousness, requiring not just the bravery to face physical dangers, but also the fortitude to uphold one's principles against opposition and adversity. The essence of courage, therefore, lies in the conscious choice to stand firm in the face of trials, motivated by a sense of duty, moral conviction, and an inherent understanding of what is just and true.

THE ALCHEMIST
When he talked about the pilgrimage to Mecca, the crystal merchant argued that having a dream is more important than fulfilling it, which is what Santiago was trying to do. Do you agree with Santiago's rationale or crystal merchant's? !!!!At least 100 words!!!!

Answers

Santiago’s life mainly revolves around finding out what his personal legend is, and the murchant’s life just involves him working everyday in his crystal shop so he would have enough money to survive. The merchants rationale behind keeping Santiago is that he believes once a person accomplishes their dreams they will go without a purpose for the rest of life. As he stated on pg.55 "I'm afraid if my dream is realized, I'll have no reason to go on living". However I find flaw in that arguement because the reason for setting dreams in your life is to make it reality. Besides if the merchant ever does decide to go to Mecca he'll realize you can always find a new purpose out of a new reality.

Isn't that good and is kinda of late, but I tried ;)

To answer this question, we will clearly state that we disagree with the crystal merchant's rationale. This is because how can one have a dream without fulfilling it? It then means that there is no need having a dream at the first place.

The crystal merchant was just after making money from his sales and that's all. But Santiago's willingness to go to Mecca is acceptable because going there might open up doors for him to fulfill his dreams and become satisfied.

The Scientist Experiments

by Stacy Lewis

(1) Scientists study the world around us. (2) One way that scientists do their jobs is by conducting experiments. (3) The experiments that scientists conduct are like tests that they perform. (4) Experiments help scientists learn how things happen in our world and why things happen in our world. (5) For example, a botanist, a type of scientist who studies plants, a botanist would perform experiments related to plants.

(6) Here is an example of a basic, meaningful experiment that a botanist might conduct. (7) The materials required are a seed, a pot of soil, and water. (8) First, the scientist plants a seed in the soil. (9) She then places the pot on a window sill, or a similarly sunny place where it can soak in the sun. (10) She waters the seed every day, watches for changes. (11) And then she dutifully records what happens. (12) After thirty days, she measures both the plant's height and weight, as well as also measuring the number of leaves it has grown.

(13) Next, she repeats the same steps with another seed, excepting that she only waters the second seed once a week this time. (14) Again, she takes records of the plant's growth and makes the same measurements. (15) Then she compares her results, hoping to figure out the impact of daily watering on plants. (16) Does regular watering make plants healthy and tall, or does it not matter? (17) Her results can help to reveal the answers to such queries.

Answers

Answer:

A

Explanation:

This change makes the sentence grammatically correct

The correct answer is A. every day, watches for changes, and dutifully records what happens

Explanation:

In general terms, the purpose for revisions is to improve a sentence, text or paragraph, usually because these have problems in punctuation, spelling, use of transitions, etc. In the text presented, which is about Scientist Experiments, the sentences to be revised are sentence 10 and 11 "She waters the seed every day, watches for changes. And then she dutifully records what happens".

The main issue with these sentences is the use of punctuation as, according to grammar it is not necessary to separate two sentences if the conjunction "and" is being used, instead the period should be replaced by a comma to create a longer sentence. Additionally the use of the word "then" is not necessary as the coordinating conjunction "and" implies one action is linked to the other. Therefore, the best revision is "every day, watches for changes, and dutifully records what happens".

A college newspaper interviews a psychologist about a proposed system for rating the teaching ability of faculty members. The psychologist says, “The evidence indicates that the correlation between a faculty member’s research productivity and teaching rating is close to zero.” Which of the following is the best interpretation of this statement? (a) Good researchers tend to be low rated teachers and vice versa. (b) Highly rated teachers tend to be poor researchers and vice versa. (c) Good researchers are just as likely to be highly rated teachers as they are to be low rated teachers; likewise for poor researchers. (d) Good research and high teaching ratings go hand in hand.

Answers

Answer:

The answer is B because the text says "teaching rating is close to zero"

Final answer:

The statement indicates that there is no substantial correlation between a faculty member's research productivity and their teaching rating. This suggests that good researchers are just as likely to be highly rated teachers as they are to be low rated teachers, and vice versa. Therefore, both research and teaching skills are different yet significant aspects of academic environments.

Explanation:

In regard to the statement, "The evidence indicates that the correlation between a faculty member’s research productivity and teaching rating is close to zero", the best interpretation would be (c) Good researchers are just as likely to be highly rated teachers as they are to be low rated teachers; likewise for poor researchers.

This statement from the psychologist suggests that there is little to no statistical relationship between a faculty member's research productivity and their teaching rating. It means that being a successful researcher does not necessarily ensure high teaching ratings, nor does being a poor researcher predict low teaching ratings. Whether a faculty member is good or poor at research, their teaching might be highly rated or could be poorly rated, with no clear pattern based on their research performance.
