Answer:

Answer:

Odysseus is the leader of his crew.

Odysseus is helped by a supernatural power.

Odysseus bares the responsibility of leading men in a dangerous journey with the guidance of the gods. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

Doctor Pascal
by Emile Zola

In the heat of the glowing July afternoon, the room, with blinds carefully closed, was full of a great calm. From the three windows, through the cracks of the old wooden shutters, came only a few scattered sunbeams which, in the midst of the obscurity, made a soft brightness that bathed surrounding objects in a diffused and tender light. It was cool here in comparison with the overpowering heat that was felt outside, under the fierce rays of the sun that blazed upon the front of the house.

Standing before the press which faced the windows, Dr. Pascal was looking for a paper that he had come in search of. With doors wide open, this immense press of carved oak, adorned with strong and handsome mountings of metal, dating from the last century, displayed within its capacious depths an extraordinary collection of papers and manuscripts of all sorts, piled up in confusion and filling every shelf to overflowing. For more than thirty years the doctor had thrown into it every page he wrote, from brief notes to the complete texts of his great works on heredity. Thus it was that his searches here were not always easy. He rummaged patiently among the papers, and when he at last found the one he was looking for, he smiled.

For an instant longer he remained near the bookcase, reading the note by a golden sunbeam that came to him from the middle window. He himself, in this dawnlike light, appeared, with his snow-white hair and beard, strong and vigorous; although he was near sixty, his color was so fresh, his features were so finely cut, his eyes were still so clear, and he had so youthful an air that one might have taken him, in his close-fitting, maroon velvet jacket, for a young man with powdered hair.

The first paragraph creates which of these moods for the passage?

Solemn
Watchful
Agitated
Peaceful

Answers

Answer:The correct answer is peaceful. Even though it is very hot outside and the sun is blazing, the room is calm, the blinds only allow a few rays of sunlight i to the room which adds to the peacefulness.

Explanation:

Answer: D) Peaceful.

Explanation: In literature, mood is a literary element that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions. We can also say that the mood is the emotional setting of the piece or its atmosphere. The first paragraph of the given excerpt creates a peaceful mood (corresponding to option D), because it describes a room full with calm, with a soft brightness and tender light.

Read the excerpt from "A Quilt of a Country." America is an improbable idea. A mongrel nation built of ever-changing disparate parts, it is held together by a notion, the notion that all men are created equal, though everyone knows that most men consider themselves better than someone. "Of all the nations in the world, the United States was built in nobody's image," the historian Daniel Boorstin wrote. That's because it was built of bits and pieces that seem discordant, like the crazy quilts that have been one of its great folk-art forms, velvet and calico and checks and brocades. Out of many, one. That is the ideal. Which statement best explains the role context plays in better understanding this excerpt? Quindlen uses the context of American diversity to help readers rethink the concept of American identity and understand that she supports the idea of unity among Americans of all cultures. Understanding that Quindlen is the descendant of immigrants helps the reader realize that she supports the idea that some cultures are naturally better than others. Quindlen uses the context of living in the United States during the 9/11 attacks to help the reader realize that she feels that unity among all Americans is impossible to achieve. Read the following passage:
People who are in favor of animal testing are essentially arguing that the capture and torture of living beings is something that we should celebrate.

The counter-argument in the passage above contains which logical fallacy?
A. Slippery slope
B. Straw man
C. Begging the question
D. False causality

Answers

Final answer:

The counter-argument in the passage uses a Straw man fallacy by misrepresenting the position of those in favor of animal testing.

Explanation:

The counter-argument described in the passage contains a logical fallacy known as a Straw man. This type of fallacy occurs when someone misrepresents an opponent's argument to make it easier to attack or refute. In this case, those who are in favor of animal testing are not necessarily arguing that "capture and torture" is something to celebrate. Instead, this incorrect or exaggerated representation of their position sidesteps the actual arguments in favor of animal testing, such as medical benefits, and sets up a simplified argument that's easier to criticize.

In each sentence, underline each part of the compound subject and circle the
word (and, or, or nor) joining the parts. Then underline the correct verb form
in parentheses. On the line, write S if the verb is singular or P if it is plural.
1. Both the book and the movie script (am, is, are) by the same writer.
2. Either that chain or the independent stores (carries, carry) my brand.
3. Neither the hanging lamps nor the ceiling fixture (gives, give) enough light.
4. A dozen pennies and one dime (makes, make) my change purse heavy. -
5. No matter what problems happen on this tour, the Cabot sisters or Mr. Van Ness
(has, have) the solution.

Answers

Answer:

1. are

2. carry

3. give

4.  make

5. have

Explanation:

Compound subjects joined by 'and' generally take a plural verb, whereas those connected by 'or' or 'nor' require a verb that agrees with the nearest subject to the verb. This rule applies regardless of whether the subject comes before or after the verb, ensuring subject-verb agreement.

Understanding how to pair compound subjects with the correct verb forms is essential in crafting grammatically correct sentences. Here's how you can apply these rules to the given sentences:

Both the book and the movie script are by the same writer. (P)

Either that chain or the independent stores carry my brand. (P) because 'the independent stores' is closest to the verb and is plural.

Neither the hanging lamps nor the ceiling fixture gives enough light. (S) because 'the ceiling fixture,' which is singular, is nearest to the verb.

A dozen pennies and one dime make my change purse heavy. (P)

No matter what problems happen on this tour, the Cabot sisters or Mr. Van Ness has the solution. (S) because 'Mr. Van Ness,' which is singular, is closest to the verb.

In Animal Farm, how does Orwell make fun of bureaucracy?

Answers

Final answer:

Orwell satirizes bureaucracy in Animal Farm through the actions of the pigs, who represent the bureaucratic elite. They manipulate the system to serve their interests, often changing rules to justify their self-serving actions. This depiction mocks bureaucracy as an institution that prioritizes its power and privileges over the welfare of the public.

Explanation:

In George Orwell's Animal Farm, the author satirizes bureaucracy through the character development and the storyline. The pigs represent the bureaucratic elite, and they manipulate the system to serve their interests, causing suffering and confusion among the other animals. The bureaucracy is depicted as incompetent, manipulative, and self-serving.

For instance, the character of Squealer, who serves as the bureaucrat in charge of propaganda, often alters the Seven Commandments to fit the pigs' self-serving actions. Similarly, Snowball's plans for a windmill, which initially aimed at improving the farm conditions, are used by Napoleon, the farm leader, to consolidate power and command over the animals.

These examples reveal how Orwell cleverly mocks bureaucracy, depicting it as an institution that is more interested in preserving its own power and privileges than in serving the people it's supposed to represent.

I answer that every requisite in female economy is easily attained; and, with truth I can add, that when once attained, they require no further mental attention. Nay, while we are pursuing the needle, or the superintendence of the family, I repeat, that our minds are at full liberty for reflection; that imagination may exert itself in full vigor; and that if a just foundation is early laid, our ideas will then be worthy of rational beings. If we were industrious we might easily find time to arrange them upon paper, or should avocations press too hard for such an indulgence, the hours allotted for conversation would at least become more refined and rational.

Should it still be vociferated, "Your domestic employments are sufficient"—I would calmly ask, is it reasonable, that a candidate for immortality, for the joys of heaven, an intelligent being, who is to spend an eternity in contemplating the works of the Deity, should at present be so degraded, as to be allowed no other ideas, than those which are suggested by the mechanism of a pudding, or the sewing the seams of a garment?

Based on this excerpt, which phrase means the same as, "avocations press too hard for such an indulgence"? (5 points)

A: All work and no play

B: No work and no play

C: No work and all play

D: All work and all play

Answers

Answer:

A. But do not be surprised if it is not.

Explanation:

The author in the sentence quoted is saying that if women cannot afford the time to put their ideas to paper, then at least the ideas expressed in their conversation should improve.

I don't think it is a question of work and play. It's sort of a silly phrase, but I realize you are stuck with it.

I think A is your best answer, and I cannot think of any kind of alternative from the other 3 that are satisfactory. The problem is that there is compensation for having little time but being able to think: the time spent contemplating will show up in conversation.

The phrase 'avocations press too hard for such an indulgence' is equated to 'All work and no play', suggesting that duties are too demanding to allow for leisure time.

The phrase "avocations press too hard for such an indulgence" means that one's other commitments or work (avocations) are too demanding to allow for the luxury (indulgence) of engaging in a certain enjoyable activity, such as writing thoughts on paper in this context. This situation is akin to being so busy with work and responsibilities that there's no time left for leisure or relaxation.

When looking at the multiple-choice options provided, the phrase that most closely aligns with this meaning is A: All work and no play. This option implies that a person is so consumed by their work or other duties that they have no time for leisure, which is the essence of what the phrase in question is conveying.

- B.) It deals with the sad emotions of losing a loved one.

Final answer:

The excerpt from the poem addresses a traditional subject in a nontraditional structure, reflecting Modernist ideals by breaking from the traditional form and highlighting a fragmented view of the theme. Therefore, the correct option is: D. It addresses a traditional subjec th a nontraditional structure

Explanation:

The excerpt best illustrates Modernist ideals through providing an unconventional and fragmented view on a subject, echoing the Modernist approach to theme and structure. In this case, the option that fits best is D. It addresses a traditional subject with a nontraditional structure. The nontraditional structure is seen in the stream-of-consciousness style, the disjointed images, and the lack of a clear, linear narrative. The poem breaks from the traditional poetic forms and often challenges the notion of objective reality, a hallmark of Modernism. Modernist poetry is characterized by a break with traditional forms of poetry, a trait that can be identified in the excerpt.

Topic: Should the Death Penalty be Abolished?

Although the Death Penelty is a very strict protocol, should it really be abolished? I believe that yes, it should be abolished. Here are 3 simple reasons why: the crime rate won’t be reduced either way, innocent people face the consequence for the culprit, it has been identified as a cruel and unusual punishment. Although there are various reasons why the Death Penalty should be abolished these are the three main ones that stand out the most.

Did you see the crime rate increasing by the minute all over the world? Yes, even countries with the capital punishment in effect have not been identified for crime rates being reduced. Studies have shown that “States that have death penalty laws do not have lower crime rates or murder rates than states without such laws.” This quote indicates that with or without the death penalty in affect, crime or murder rates have not been reduced. Crime and murder rates have not been shown to ruduce hece why the death penalty should be abolished since there has been no affect anyways.

Have you ever in your life been wrongfully accused of a certain action and had to face the consequence for the real culprit? How does it feel? Imagine an innocent person having to face the death penalty for the person that actually committed the crime. My reasearch has identified that “Eighteen people have been proven innocent and exonerated by DNA testing in the United States after serving time on death row. They were convicted in 11 states and served a combined 229 years in prison – including 202 years on death row – for crimes they didn't commit.” This suggests that many innocent lives have faced the death penalty for crimes that they have not committed which isn’t fair. This indicates that the death penalty should be abolished because innocent people could face the consequences.

Can it really be true? Yes, the death penalty is the cruel capital punishment for wrongdoings. The death penalty has established fear through the community and countries/states. Research has proven that “It is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. The death penalty is discriminatory. It is often used against the most vulnerable in society, including the poor, ethnic and religious minorities, and people with mental disabilities. Some governments use it to silence their opponents.” This identifies that the death penalty is cruel because it’s not only used for crime but used to (for example) silence others.

In conclusion, yes I strongly believe that the death penalty should be abolished. 3 reasons why I strongly believe that the death penalty should be abolished is because, the crime rate won’t be reduced either way, innocent people face the consequence for the culprit, it has been identified as a cruel and unusual punishment.

C.
She only spoke perfect standard English with her mother in an attempt to make her mother speak more clearly.
D.
She would not impersonate her mother on the phone when making important calls for her.

Answers

Answer:

the correct answer is A

Explanation:

In "Mother Tongue," Amy Tan demonstrates language bias towards her mother in option A.She believed her mother's thoughts were unimportant because she expressed them imperfectly.

In "Mother Tongue," Amy Tan, the author, reflects on her experiences with her mother, who is a Chinese immigrant with limited English proficiency. Tan's mother spoke English with an accent, and her grammar and syntax were sometimes awkward, making it difficult for others to understand her. However, Tan recognized that her mother's limitations in English did not mean that she was unintelligent or unimportant.

Tan confesses that she used to be ashamed of her mother's imperfect English and that she often corrected her mother's grammar and syntax. She came to realize that her mother's "broken" English was an essential part of her identity and the way she expressed herself. Tan also recognized that many people who have English as their second language face discrimination, and their lack of proficiency does not indicate a lack of intelligence. Thus, Amy Tan demonstrates language bias towards her mother by believing that her mother's thoughts were unimportant because she expressed them imperfectly.

Thus, the correct option is A.

Which section from the article BEST explains how sleep can affect memories?

Question 1 options:

Introduction [paragraphs 1-5]

"Light Sleep Stages"

"No Longer In Control"

"Flushing Out Harmful Toxins"

Question 2 (1 point)
Read the following paragraph from the section "Flushing Out Harmful Toxins."

Another theory is that sleep is restorative and cleans out harmful toxins that can hurt the brain. During sleep, the space between brain cells increases. This allows harmful toxic proteins to be flushed out. In an October 2013 issue of the journal Science, researchers published the results of a study hypothesizing that the brain uses sleep to flush out harmful waste. This waste removal system, they suggest, is one of the major reasons why we sleep. By removing harmful waste from the brain, sleep may stave off diseases like Alzheimer's, which is characterized by memory loss.

What conclusion is BEST supported by the paragraph above?

Sleep might be an important tool to keep people healthy. is correct

Final answer:

The section 'Light Sleep Stages' likely best explains how sleep can affect memories. The paragraph from 'Flashing Out Harmful Toxins' suggests that sleep might be an essential tool for maintaining health. The author discusses dreaming after sleep stages to highlight an important activity that happens during REM sleep, and Aristotle's beliefs about sleep are included to show that people have been attempting to understand sleep for a long time.

Explanation:

The section from the article that best explains how sleep can affect memories is likely the one titled 'Light Sleep Stages', as this section typically discusses the connection between sleep and memory consolidation. However, without the text of the article, it's difficult to provide a definitive answer.

The conclusion that is BEST supported by the paragraph from the section 'Flushing Out Harmful Toxins' is that sleep might be an important tool to keep people healthy. This conclusion is inferred from the mention of sleep playing a critical role in flushing out harmful toxins that can damage the brain and potentially stave off diseases such as Alzheimer's.

The author likely provides information about dreaming after introducing the sleep stages in order to 'highlight one activity, dreaming, that happens during REM sleep'. This progression ensures that readers possess a clear understanding of the sleep stages before delving into a significant occurrence (dreaming) during one of those stages.

The purpose of including Aristotle's beliefs about sleep is probably 'to show that people have tried to understand sleep for a long time'. This indicates that our curiosity and exploration of sleep aren't recent phenomena but have roots in ancient thought and inquiry.

Read the following excerpt from Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. "Marilla’s lips twitched understandingly. She had expected Mrs. Rachel to say this; she had known that the sight of Matthew jaunting off so unaccountably would be too much for her neighbor’s curiosity. If Marilla had said that Matthew had gone to Bright River to meet a kangaroo from Australia Mrs. Rachel could not have been more astonished. She was actually quiet for five seconds. "It was unsupposable that Marilla was making fun of her, but Mrs. Rachel was almost forced to suppose it." From what point of view is the excerpt told? A third person limited B third person omniscient C first person D second person

Answers

B third person omniscient

The excerpt from 'Anne of Green Gables' is told from a third person limited point of view, focusing on Marilla's perspective and thoughts. So, option B is correct.

The excerpt from Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery is told from a third person limited point of view. This narrative voice provides the reader with the inner thoughts and feelings of Marilla, but not of Mrs. Rachel or Matthew. We see the situation through Marilla's eyes, knowing what she expects Mrs. Rachel to think and understanding her unspoken humor, which indicates a limited perspective rather than an omniscient one. In contrast, a third person omniscient narration would provide the thoughts and feelings of other characters as well, whereas first person would be narrated by a character in the story, and second person would address the reader as 'you'.
