Explanation:

Why was west Africa colonized

Answers

The Colonization of Africa was due to a wide range of factors, not only economic and political but also for social, religious, humanitarian and technological reasons, which differed from country to country. Africa’s diplomatic, strategic and material potential led European Powers to seize the opportunity to exploit a new continent. During a period between 1870 and 1914, where the continent of Africa was completely annexed by the leading European powers: Britain, France, Germany, Portugal and Italy, leaving just two countries with independence: Ethiopia and Liberia. The interest in Africa begun before 1870. Britain and France were the first European powers to show interest in Africa’s dominated the regional partitions. France controlled a large section of western and central Africa, whilst British conquered much of east and southern Africa. Late-comers were left to compete for the rather worthless or utterly insignificant remained territories.

There is much evidence to suggest that the ‘scramble for Africa’ was the result of economic needs. The 1870s witnessed the onset of The Great Depression as seen by contemporaries, and a downturn in the economy and trade. Industrial countries were over-producing, and there was increased competition between industrial powers for existing markets. Furthermore, it was becoming increasingly difficult to trade within Europe as counties like Italy reintroduced protection. This led to Europe looking overseas for new markets to trade with to reduce the surplus goods, and provide a buffer for the mother country to protect it from economic extremes of boom and bust. It can be seen therefore, that the ‘scramble for Africa’ came as a result of European countries competing for ‘potentially rich markets’ in an attempt to restore their economies.

Another economic explanation for the ‘scramble’ is that Africa had the potential to provide Europe with cheap raw materials that could be used in production, such as palm oil or cotton. Pressure came from businesses such as the German Colonial Association for colonisation in Africa. They believed it would provide a source of cheap labour, which combined with cheaper raw materials and an increased market would generate better profits and help the economy. Many of these business groups however, were actually comprised of politicians and aristocrats who used economic benefits to disguise their nationalist desires; nevertheless, they provided a pressure that contributed to governments becoming involved in the ‘scramble’.

Hobson argues that ‘surplus capital in Europe was the driving force behind the expansion into Africa’ and this idea has been taken up by many Marxist writers. In practice however, this argument must be questioned, as most people did not invest their money in African colonies, but rather in countries where they believed it would gain the biggest return. The French for example invested in the Russian railway system, and the Germans in Austria. Also, it does not explain the need for a ‘scramble’.

The belief that Africa may harbour reserves of valuable gold, diamonds and minerals provided further incentive for expansion. No European power wanted to miss out on gaining land that could provide wealth in the future, and this therefore contributed to the ‘scramble’.

These economic reasons alone however, do not explain why European powers became involved in a ‘scramble for Africa’, as comparatively small amounts of money were invested into Africa and trade generated was not significant. In Britain for example, trade mainly occurred with dominion colonies such as Canada, and by 1911 out of 2.8 million square miles and 40 million people, only 3.8% of British overseas trade came from Africa .

Geopolitics was an important factor that led to the ‘scramble for Africa’. Many European countries had imperial colonies and interests in Asia; India for example was Britain’s most prized colony.
Final answer:

West Africa was colonized by European nations seeking raw materials, new markets, and influence. The colonization was facilitated by advances in medicine, such as treatments for malaria, superior weaponry, and mechanized vehicles. The slave trade and wealth in natural resources were significant attractors for European powers involved in the scramble for Africa.

Explanation:Why Was West Africa Colonized?

West Africa was colonized by European powers for a variety of reasons that spanned from economic to social impacts on the continent. The initial penetration of the Portuguese in the 15th century, marked by the seizure of Ceuta, set a precedent for subsequent European interests in Africa. The scramble for Africa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was primarily driven by European nations' desire for raw materials to support their industrial economies as well as new markets for their manufactured goods.

The slave trade was one pivotal element in West Africa's colonization. African seaside states became conduits for captives meant for the European slave markets, with certain local chieftains and merchants profiting from this trade via taxes and trade rights. Meanwhile, empires such as the Ghana and Mali Empire, known for their wealth in resources like gold and salt, drew colonizers' attention for economic reasons.

Europe's capacity to reach and control African territories increased significantly with the discovery of quinine, the advancement of mechanized vehicles, and superior weaponry. Furthermore, France aggressively expanded its colonial holdings to acquire regions rich in resources, such as palm oil, and to establish plantations that were pivotal for their cash crop-based economies. Ultimately, the imposition of colonial governance disrupted traditional African economies and societies, with lasting effects into the post-independence era.

I would go with A. The Articles of Confederation had given the Congress the same power.

According to the question, the answer would be The Articles of Confederation had given Congress the same power. Therefore option A is correct.

What was the Article of confederation?

The Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the United States, on November 15, 1777. However, ratification of the Articles of Confederation by all thirteen states did not occur until March 1, 1781.

The Articles created a loose confederation of sovereign states and a weak central government, leaving most of the power with the state governments. The need for a stronger Federal government soon became apparent and eventually led to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The present United States Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation on March 4, 1789.

This ambition evolved into the conviction that the new country needed a constitutional structure that was fitting for its republican nature during the early years of the conflict.

Why did some colonists become skilled craftsman in the Middle Colonies

Answers

Some colonists became skilled craftsmen in the Middle Colonies because it ended up not being enough open farm land for everyone to farm and there was, at that time, not enough of other trades so instead of farming, they went to craftsmanship. Most of the farm land was also covered with a lot of forestry and at the time, tree removal was a very long and lengthy process; this meant that land would open up at a painfully slow pace. Basically, they didn't have much of an option to go to other avenues to make money.

Colonists in the Middle Colonies became skilled craftsmen due to economic growth, agricultural diversity, and an increase in trade and demand for skilled labor.

Some colonists became skilled craftsmen in the Middle Colonies due to economic growth, the diversity of agricultural production, and the development of trade. Initially, colonists focused on survival and religion, but as the colonies stabilized, they had more time and resources to develop craftsmanship and artistry. The Middle Colonies were known for their production of grains and other crops, as well as their engagement in iron manufacturing, which contributed to the demand for skilled labor in the creation of tools and other commodities. Furthermore, the social structure and labor patterns in the Middle Colonies where most farms were family-run and worked by free labor allowed people to specialize in various trades. Craftsmanship such as silversmithing, furniture making, and portrait painting became highly valued as a means to produce goods that not only served practical uses but also held artistic merit, reflecting the economic or religious status of individuals.

The Parliament passed Molasses Act in 1733 in attempt to stop New England Yankee traders from trading fish, beef, and pork with the French West Indies for molasses that were made into rum.  Six (6) pence per gallon on molasses imported from the French islands.

The right answer is molasses.

Making rum from molasses, a syrup derived from sugarcane, was quite profitable. So, in 1733 the British government passes The Sugar and Molasses Act, a tax of six pence per gallon on molasses which was imported from the French West Indies or the Dutch West Indies. The main goal of this tax was to regulate trade and promote commerce with the British West Indies. Grenville recognized that the long-neglected molasses tax if enforced would devastate a major colonial industry. So he put through the American Revenue Act of 1764, commonly known as the Sugar Act, which cut the duty on molasses in half.

How was Chicago’s importance as a shipping center maintained?

Answers

Its all about location
Chicago is in a great location to be an island port. Its location on lake Michigan gives it access to the Atlantic ocean through the great lakes. its location near the center of the country means the goods coming through the Atlantic can travel through the great lakes before unloading in Chicago. goods from west of Chicago can be loaded onto freighters and shipped to Atlantic harbors, such as new York or ever internationally.
Final answer:

Chicago maintained its role as a vital shipping center through its strategic location, which facilitated the linking of major navigable water systems, and crucial infrastructure developments like the Illinois-Michigan Canal and the convergence of multiple railroad companies. Its significance continued with the adoption of intermodal containers, boosting the efficiency of trade and manufacturing.

Explanation:

Chicago's importance as a shipping center was maintained primarily through its strategic geographic placement and the development of infrastructure that leveraged this advantage. The Illinois-Michigan Canal, opened in 1848, connected the Chicago River with the Des Plaines River, thus linking the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River system. This canal, alongside the advent of multiple railroad companies establishing terminals in Chicago during the 1850s, created numerous break-of-bulk opportunities, attracting labor, industry, and facilitating commerce. In modern times, interstate highways and airline routes have continued to converge on Chicago, maintaining its role as a critical hub for transportation and trade.

The city's growth exploded as a result; from a smaller city, it rose to become the second most populous in America in just over 30 years. Additionally, the use of intermodal containers in the shipping industry further cemented Chicago's standing, as containers allowed for efficient and cost-effective movement of goods across multiple forms of transportation—trucks, trains, barges, and ships—thus making the logistics of shipping and receiving goods much smoother and Chicago an attractive location for manufacturing and trade.

What she saw seemed simple enoughtrees, grass, large boulders, and a very blue skybut to her the view had a pattern, a pattern that spoke to her and that she wanted to put in her painting. This painting was the one she would enter into the contest at school. She wanted so much to win the award . . . it meant everything to her . . . it would be proof that she was an artist. The award was what she thought about most every day and what she talked about to her family and friends. Today both of her parents were at work. Linda and her little sister, Nina, her grandmother, and her baby brother, Carlos, were at home. Her other brothers, Luis and Miguel, were playing basketball at the community center just down the road. Since it was the weekend, Linda had time to concentrate on the painting, which she needed to finish by the next day. Nina was sitting at the table too, doing her own painting of stick figures in bright colors. Linda encouraged Nina to paint and Nina loved doing it. Linda showed Nina how to put the brush into water and then into the paint. Nina was only five, but she learned very quickly. The colors danced on the paper with each stroke of her brush. Your picture is great! Remember to be neat, Nina, Linda warned her sister. Nina sometimes showed a bit too much exuberance when she painted. Linda was very precise when she painted, as though she had a clear and vivid vision in her head which she was copying. It was about three oclock when her grandmother reminded Linda that she had to complete her household chores for the day. At first Linda felt annoyance because she was almost finished with the painting and did not want to stop, but she knew she had to do what was expected of her. Being the oldest child was sometimes difficult, Linda thought to herself. She had more responsibility than the others, but being the oldest carried some advantages. She could stay up late at night and have a little more independence When she had finished her chores, she went back to the table where Nina was sitting, obviously very intent on doing something. As Linda went over to her and looked down, her expression drooped. Nina, she cried. No, no, stop, stop. Thats my painting. What are you doing to my painting? she asked. Nina looked up surprised by what Linda said. I was helping you . . . I wanted you to win the contest, Nina answered in a tiny voice, concerned now by the look on her sisters face, but proud of the little stick people she had drawn in the landscape Tears welled up in Lindas eyes as she realized that her painting was probably ruined. She looked again at her sister who seemed so troubled by Lindas reaction. Linda took the painting and went into the kitchen. Grandma, look at what she has done . . . she has ruined my painting, she told her grandmother as she cried. Now I wont be able to win the awardI wont win the award at all. Her grandmother didnt know what to say but held out her arms and Linda clung to her, not knowing what she should do. It will be all right, she told her. You can do another. But Linda knew there would not be time between now and the next morning to finish a painting. Linda told her grandmother she needed to be alone and ran out of the house into the backyard without saying goodbye to Nina. Nina wanted to follow her but her grandmother said she shouldnt. Linda felt cheated. She knew that Nina hadnt understood and wanted to help, but now she would not win the award.
