[W]hile the vast assembly, as if with one impulse, shrank from the centres of the rooms to the walls, he made his way uninterruptedly, but with the same solemn and measured step which had distinguished him from the first, through the blue chamber to the purple—through the purple to the green—through the green to the orange—through this again to the white—and even thence to the violet, ere a decided movement had been made to arrest him.
What is the effect of parallelism in this excerpt?

A.It emphasizes the frantic spiral toward confrontation.

B.It emphasizes Prospero’s steady, confident approach.

C.It emphasizes the excessive opulence of the decor.

D.It emphasizes the rapid progression of time.

Answers

The correct answer is option letter C: It emphasizes the excessive opulence of the decor. Taken from the short story “The Masque of the Red Death” by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1842), the purpose of using parallelism in this excerpt is to emphasize the opulent, colourful décor of the rooms. Parallelism is a method of writing in which similarly constructed clauses or sentences are arranged in a pairing sequence suggesting some correspondence between them. In this case, the repeated pairing sequence mentioning the colours is “through the … to the …” (through the blue chamber to the purple—through the purple to the green—through the green to the orange—through this again to the white). Moreover, parallelism helps emphasize the importance of the colours, since they also portray the progression of life and its different stages in a symbolic way (blue: birth/ purple: youth/ green: adolescence/ orange: adulthood/ white: old age/ violet: imminent death).

What is one of the environmentally damaging effects of “drift-net fishing”?

Answers

Final answer:

Drift-net fishing leads to overharvesting, causing fish population collapses, disruptions to marine ecosystems, and socio-economic implications, such as an increased cost of living due to the loss of an inexpensive protein source.

Explanation:

One of the environmentally damaging effects of drift-net fishing is overharvesting, which leads to the collapse of certain fish populations and a radical restructuring of the marine ecosystem. When a dominant species is so over-harvested that it becomes a minor player, the effects can adversely influence many other species in ways that are difficult or impossible to predict. Also, this method of fishing endangers local fisheries, tourism, and other sectors of the local economy. Ultimately, overharvesting due to methods like drift-net fishing threaten the survival of both marine life and fisheries alike, leading to an elevated cost of living and societal limitations due to the loss of an inexpensive protein source. The detrimental long-term effects could even culminate in the loss of aquatic systems as food sources.

Answers

The correct answer is option D. The sentence that best supports the central claim of the paragraph is An estimated 8,000 female Kemp's ridley turtles nested in 2009.

Option D provides specific, quantifiable evidence that can be used to demonstrate the success of conservation efforts. The number of nesting females is a direct indicator of the population's health and growth, showing that conservation initiatives are having a positive impact.

This sentence provides measurable evidence of the positive outcomes of the conservation efforts discussed in the paragraph.

Why other options are incorrect:

Option B provides a fact about the turtle's size but does not relate to conservation efforts or their outcomes. It does not support the paragraph's claim about the success of initiatives to protect the species.

Option C indicates that there is significant volunteer support for conservation efforts, which is positive but does not provide direct evidence of success in terms of increasing the population or ensuring the species' survival.

The complete question is

The Kemp's ridley sea turtle has faced numerous challenges over the years, with their population dwindling due to various threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and illegal poaching. Conservation efforts have been put in place to protect these turtles, including protected nesting sites, regulated fishing practices, and public awareness campaigns. Read this excerpt from “The Medicine Bag.” “He carefully prepared for his quest with a purifying sweat bath, and then he went alone to a high butte top to fast and pray. After three days he received his sacred dream—in which he found, after long searching, the white man’s iron. He did not understand his vision of finding something belonging to the white people, for in that time they were the enemy. When he came down from the butte to cleanse himself at the stream below, he found the remains of a campfire and the broken shell of an iron kettle. This was a sign that reinforced his dream. He took a piece of the iron for his medicine bag, which he had made of elk skin years before, to prepare for his quest. “He returned to his village, where he told his dream to the wise old men of the tribe. They gave him the name Iron Shell, but neither did they understand the meaning of the dream. The first Iron Shell kept the piece of iron with him at all times and believed it gave him protection from the evils of those unhappy days. “Then a terrible thing happened to Iron Shell. He and several other young men were taken from their homes by the soldiers and sent far away to a white man’s boarding school. He was angry and lonesome for his parents and the young girl he had wed before he was taken away. At first Iron Shell resisted the teacher’s attempts to change him, and he did not try to learn. One day it was his turn to work in the school’s blacksmith shop. As he walked into the place, he knew that his medicine had brought him there to learn and work with the white man’s iron. “Iron Shell became a blacksmith and worked at the trade when he returned to the reservation. All of his life he treasured the medicine bag.” What is symbolic about the piece of the iron that Iron Shell keeps in his medicine bag? It represents a mixing of two cultures. It explains how Iron Shell became a blacksmith. It represents a young man giving up on his traditions. It explains the history of the reservation.

Answers

To my mind, it symbolizes the history of the reservation. The medicine bag is passed from one generation to another and it represents the reservation’s cultural heritage. It represents a mixing of two cultures and is symbolic of the piece of iron that Iron Shell keeps in his medicine bag. Therefore, option A is correct.

What is the medicine bag story about?

In this brief tale, a boy's Sioux grandpa pays a visit with the goal of presenting the boy with a medicine bag a tiny leather bag that holds sacramental, medicinal plants, and personal mementos. Under their garments, a person wears a medicine bag to provide them with protection and good health.

"Learn From Your Elders" or "The Young Learning from the Experienced" was the story's central topic. This theme is about how a youngster or someone younger than an adult or senior can learn from them.

Martin learns the importance of the Medicine Bag from his great-grandfather in the short narrative. The 1975 publication of Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve's short story "The Medicine Bag" focuses on the connection between a Sioux man and his grandson in the intersection.

B.
It gives a "fly on the wall" perspective of the main character.
C.
It provides an objective look at the main character.
D.
It gives an intimate view inside the main character.

Answers

The correct answer is: It gives an intimate view inside the main character

The main character's point of view and the way he is said to relate to what is around him, through his preferences, his perceptions, his senses, bring to the story a more intimate view of this character. Excerpts like "I never seem able to" or "my ability" show strengths and weaknesses of the character. His strength was to be a good listener, his weakness would perhaps be his shyness or sense of inability to comment.

The answer is D

It gives an intimate view inside the main character.

This passage gives an intimate view inside the main character; it gives us his intimate tastes for listening to other people speaking. He describes very well these thoughts as something he never shares with anyone, he mentions these thoughts only to himself like inner wisdom, like holding a prize, and he knows it is a prize that nobody or very few possess. This is why he feels proud of himself, because he is one of the very few who can really listen, for him it is listening a skill that overpowers humanity, a humanity so timeless to give importance to what really empowers it.  He considers this skill, this art of listening so important that he never sees his own topics of conversation as worthy of sharing and when he speaks it is because he feels that what he is listening lacks  variety and decides to intervene so that the speaker can find different words to express his or her ideas.

But of course the robin knows it best, Because she built the—I shan't tell the rest; And laid the four little—something in it— I'm afraid I shall tell it every minute. But if the tree and the robin don't peep, I'll try my best the secret to keep; Though I know when the little birds fly about Then the whole secret will be out.

The secret is that the robin made the tree. What has me believe so, is because the robin said she knows the secret best. "Because she built the—I shan't tell the rest; And laid the four little—something in it—" and Then say,"Though I know when the little birds fly about Then the whole secret will be out."  You can fly out of a tree!
